Ontario’s Staycation Tax Credit: Here’s What You Should Know

Staying local has never been more tempting: the Ontario government has introduced a tax credit that reimburses you for up to 20% of eligible accommodation expenses throughout 2022. The goal is to encourage Ontarians to explore their province and boost the local economy.

So, how does it work? Ontario residents can claim 20% of their 2022 stays at places like hotels, cottages and campgrounds. Your savings can add up quickly:

  • Individuals: claim up to $1,000 for a maximum reimbursement of up to $200
  • Families (including spouse, common-law partner, and children): claim up to $2,000 for a maximum reimbursement of up to $400

Take a bite out of your vacation costs thanks to this exciting new tax credit.

Still have questions on how the Staycation Tax Credit works? We’ve got you covered.

  • Who is eligible?

As long as you were an Ontario resident on December 31, 2022, you’re eligible for the staycation tax credit. Only one person per family can claim the credit.

  • Can I take my trip in 2023 if I paid for it in 2022?

Unfortunately, the credit only applies to leisure stays between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022, regardless of when you paid for it.

  • When can I claim my credit?

You can claim the credit on your personal Income Tax and Benefit Return for 2022.

  • Can I apply the maximum tax credit over multiple trips instead of one?

Absolutely. Take as many trips as you’d like, keeping in mind the maximum credit expense limit of $1,000 for individuals and $2,000 for families.

  • Does my length of stay matter or when I stay?

No, as long as it’s between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022, and each stay is less than a month long.

  • Can the credit be applied to non-accommodation expenses?

Unfortunately, the credit is only applicable to the accommodation portion of the trip expense.

  • Does the credit apply to business trips?

Unfortunately, the credit is only for leisure stays. Trips for work, business, school or educational purposes aren’t eligible.
